I had no trouble selecting an external USB drive for backup, however. That means you can't use BackItUp to create a full system image, as you can with Carbonite and IDrive. Some things aren't fair game for backup, including system files and program files. You can uncheck any of these categories and tap Customize Selection for full control of the file set. Nero's window tells you exactly how much storage these files will take up in my case, it was 4GB. Note that some services, such as Carbonite, won't back up videos without an upgraded account. The program automatically selects the most likely backup suspects-photos, videos, music, and documents. Clicking it takes you to a file-selection screen. The program window displays a huge green button that says Back Up Now. I really like the desktop program's clear and attractive interface. When the quick setup wizard finishes, it keeps playing an informational slideshow and says, "Installation of Nero BackItUp has been completed successfully." Next, I clicked the "Start your backup" button, which reopened my Web browser to show a three-step process, along with an instructional video. I tested by downloading and installing the free trial and then upgraded to the Unlimited Pro on an HP EliteBook 8460p, and a slender Samsung NP900X3B ultrabook, both running Windows 8.1. Backing up to local storage is free with Nero, however, and there's a free trial of the Pro online backup service that's good for a whole year. But note that you could get a fully functional 5GB free online storage from IDrive compared with Nero's $14.99 plan. So Nero's fee is not out of line in fact, it beats several competitors' prices. IDrive gets you 1TB for $59.50 with unlimited devices, and the Carbonite ($49.99 Per Year at Carbonite) (Opens in a new window) unlimited plan for one PC costs $59.99 per year. Since 1982, PCMag has tested and rated thousands of products to help you make better buying decisions. The BackItUp desktop client runs on Window XP through Windows 8.1, but note there's no Mac OS X client. For $19.99 a year, your space increases to 25GB, and for $69.99 you get unlimited storage. For those features, Pro plans start at $14.99 per year for 5GB of storage covering five machines. But that doesn't grant you the use of the desktop client's auto-backup and encryption capabilities. Let's see how well Nero can fiddle in this very competitive space, however.Īs with most online backup services these days, you can get started using Nero BackItUp absolutely free, with 5GB of online storage at no charge. It's a pretty rich offering, with a single account covering up to five PCs and unlimited smartphones, and duplicating your backup on local storage comes along with all plans. BackItUp has been a component of Nero Multimedia Suite for a few years, but it has more recently broken away from the suite for its own starring role. Software developer Nero has long been known for its Burning Rome (get it?) disc-writing software, but the company has recently shifted its efforts toward online backup with BackItUp ($14.99 per year for 5GB) ($39.95 at Nero) (Opens in a new window).

This is pretty bad, especially since Norton detected 100% of real-time threats. Unfortunately, I was surprised to find that the highest detection rate I got was just 85%. Knowing this, I started testing Cylance with high expectations. Real-time protection is Cylance’s primary focus, using AI as the backbone of its threat detection. Real-Time Protection - Surprisingly Low Detection Rates Cylance didn’t achieve the best result in real-time tests, and the malware scanner was confusing to activate. This way the job will run in the background and the command prompt will not pop up every time that the backup process needs to run. Also choose the “Run whether user is logged on or not”. Give a name and description for the job on the General tab. You can create a new folder under the Task Scheduler Library to keep your custom tasks neatly in one place. Open the Windows menu and search for “Task Scheduler”. However, it is quite easy to automate the process with the built-in Task Scheduler in Windows. Running backup jobs only when you happen to remember them is not a great idea. Next, the available revisions can be listed with the duplicacy list command and the files recovered with whe duplicacy restore command where the -r parameter takes the revision number that you want to fetch. There we need to use the same initialization command that we used for the actual backup. With the first command we navigate to another directory. > duplicacy init vault sftp:// /srv/dev-disk-by-label-storage/vault If you now open a new terminal window you should be able to call the program without the full path like this: Ĭlick New to add a new entry and either write the path to the directory that contains the executable files, or use the browse feature.Under the System variables section choose Path and click edit Ĭlick Environment Variables in the System Properties window.Press the Windows key, search for “Edit the system environment variables” and hit enter Rename the file to duplicacy.exe and follow these instructions to add the Duplicacy CLI to your path:Ĭreate a directory where you want to store the executables, for example I’m using G:\executables and copy the duplicacy.exe file there However, having to specify the full path to the executable can be tedious. Go to the releases page and download the latest release, then extract the executable wherever you want and it is usable on the command line if you define the full path. With the free CLI version there isn’t much to do with installation. The target machine is the openmediavault installation that I set up in earlier post. In this post we will set up backups with an SFTP server. With the GUI version you get a fancy interface to manage your backups but if you are happy with the command line then the CLI version should be enough.ĭuplicacy supports many cloud storage backends such as: If you want to use the GUI version or you want to use the application commercially then you need to buy a license. For more details check the Duplicacy design notes. The contents of each snapshot is stored on a file that points to the correct chunks. Each chunk is stored in a path that depends on its hash. In simple terms Duplicacy takes your files and splits them into smaller chunks. If you’re backing up multiple computers to the same storage then the space savings can be really substantial. Generally, people seemed to be happy with it and that’s why I chose to go with it.ĭuplicacy makes use of file deduplication which can save lots of space if you have many duplicate files. While not being free and open source software in the strict manner the CLI version of Duplicacy is free for personal use and the source code is available on the Duplicacy GitHub repository. After trying out a couple of tools I finally chose to go with Duplicacy. I searched for different alternative backup software solutions and found out that there are quite many to choose from. It was better than nothing but required manual work and it was easy to forget to copy any new files over to the backup drive. My previous way of backing up images was to manually copy them to a USB drive that was attached to my home router and shared over the local network. You will need to adapt some parts if you want to do the same for another OS. After all I don’t want to lose all my precious images to a hard drive failure. I postponed setting up a backup solution for so long but now that I have a local file server all ready and set up I finally took the time and figured it out. File backups can be difficult to do properly. So rear deflectors cleans this big vacuum at the rear of the trailer. A vaccum creates more drag than deflected air, so every setup has to eliminate any chance of creating such a vaccum between cab and trailer. Like the deflectors in the rear of the Station Wagons in the 50-70's. There is a study somewhere that indicates that a rear deflector on the rear is the best fuel saver, and no one is using it. The weight of the load had no effect on mileage. I just returned from a 100 mile trip with a load of lumber in the truck box and the fuel mileage was the best I have ever done with this truck, due to the smooth flow with a full box without a large vaccuum created behind the cab. every inch over the cab adds enormous drag. I find that it makes my truck look weak having a deflector, and its a fuel killer when not towing. I read somewhere and Cummings covers it on their truck fuel economy site, that the installation is very important for proper performance, and it has to be equal frontal area and as close to the trailer front as possible. The Heartland 5th wheels do have a very aero front so much that the Fuel mileage on my truck is 20% better then the previous SOB. I towed an SOB with angled flat front and there was lots wind pressure on the front and even cracked it. In my opinion, the Heartland nose cone reaps no aero advantage from a deflector. A short box truck would have the advantage here. The deflector has to be as close to the trailer as possible both deflector manufacturers stated so in their install instructions. The other advantage is that I can lay the deflector down and provide shade for the back seat passengers.and she fits in the garage!! The unit is not angled enough side-to-side nor wide enough to keep the entire front end clean. I added the Trail-Eze to the 450 simply to keep the bugs off the front of the Cyclone. I have removed the extension and use just the wing when hauling my open car trailer. I added the extension (for use with 11 footers and taller) and we did really well. I started with just the stainless wing but couldn't get the bugline up and over the leading edge. It acted as a parachute going down the road. My original 5th wheel was a National RV Rage'N ont nose was nearly vertical & box-like. For example, 50,000 miles at 12mpg and diesel for $3.50 is about $14,600, so saving about 10% or $1,460 would probably pay for the deflector.Īs Porthole stated I run two styles of deflector I have the stainless w/extension for the 350 and the Ultra-Fab Trail-Eze II for the 450. With that said, they look cool, may help with the bugs and stability especially if you don't have a dually, and may even save money if you primarily tow with your truck and put on a decent number of miles. Now keep in mind that a 5th wheel is more aerodynamic than a trailer to begin with, a deflector for our trucks will not match the efficiency of those semis' integrated designs, that the savings only occur when you tow, and your mileage may actually go down with a deflector when not towing (even with one that can be lowered, due to the increased weight). Now obviously there is something to be gained with those kind of numbers with that widespread usage, and I found a test report online that came up with about 15% savings with a complete aero kit on a semi (both cab and trailer). Shortly after seeing that deflector we took a trip and I paid attention to how many semis have deflectors, and I'd guess about 90% or better have them, usually integrated with the cab. He had his mounted on a bracket right behind the cab. I asked a guy that had one on his truck and he claimed that he gained about 50 miles per tank with his previous 5th wheel, but not as much with his present travel trailer as the distance between deflector and trailer is too great to be effective. If there were there is a magnetic field inside of your alternator and Detroit could run your fuel line through or around your alternator and improve your fuel mileage. That old wives tale has been around for years and there is not a shred of truth to it. Had they bothered to call me for some advice I could have told them to save their $$$$. They were installed on the bus that I drove. Several years ago our esteemed school district, at the advice of a new assistant superintendent installed magnets around the fuel lines on 70 of our school buses. I always told my students that if it really did improve fuel mileage then Detroit would have incorporated it into their vehicles. Now if you were to add all the small improvements to aerodynamics that have been incorporated into today's vehicles it probably does add up to significant fuel savings. It's been proven that they don't save fuel but I suppose they are still COOL. It was supposed to improve gas mileage and it is also COOL. You've seen many a pickup with a net instead of a tailgate. The expectation is that if a significant number of us were to experience something close to that of astronauts, through video and virtual reality for example, the world would be a better place. In fact, there is now a worldwide movement to ‘bring the Overview Effect down to Earth’. Today, the cognitive shift in awareness experienced by astronauts after seeing Earth from space has come into its own and is used by the space advocacy community to justify both government and private expenditures on space exploration and development. For a long time, I thought I had failed in this endeavour but even though I may not have created a revolution at the time it now appears one has begun. Whilst writing The Overview Effect, I wanted to create a revolution in how we think about space exploration, our planet and ourselves. Here, he explores the overview effect concept and considers its future development. Author and space philosopher, Frank White, has long advocated developing a new philosophy of space exploration. Since the first publication of The Overview Effect: Space Exploration and Human Evolution in 1987, the term ‘Overview Effect’ has entered the space vernacular as a generally accepted descriptor for the shift in worldview that results from seeing Earth from space.
